Communist Party Leader Calls for Independent Inquiry into Police Repression during G20

Communist Party of Canada leader Miguel Figueroa today sharply denounced the wave of police repression which swept over downtown Toronto since last Saturday afternoon during the G20 Summit, and has called for a comprehensive independent public inquiry, including a thorough investigation of those politically responsible for giving a “green light” for the police thuggery and the unprecedented number of detentions and arrests.

G8/G20: Fight for a Real Alternative to the new Capitalist “Consensus”

On the eve of the G8/G20 meetings, mass labour and democratic mobilizations are building in Southern Ontario and across Canada to protest this wasteful, security‑obsessed extravaganza. The Communist Party of Canada salutes this resistance and takes its rightful place alongside workers, students, women, Aboriginal peoples and social activists in denouncing these summits which aim to hammer out a strategic line among the ruling imperialist states and international finance capital on how best to advance their shared interests, and then present their agenda as a fait accompli to the world’s peoples.

Communist Party of Canadadenounces Israel’s acts of piracy and murder

The Communist Party of Canada denounces the acts of piracy and murder committed by the Israeli government on May 31 against the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in international waters. This brazen military attack against unarmed civilians on the high seas – peace activists bringing humanitarian aid to the imprisoned people of Gaza – has rightly met with a storm of international condemnation.

Siemens is trying to distract public attention from the real reason for its unilateral decision to shut the Hamilton turbine facility in 15 months and layoff 550 workers – an operation Siemens recently boasted was highly productive and efficient –by blaming public concerns about coal fired generation for their departure to North Carolina next year.

Resolution adopted by the 36th Central Convention, Communist Party of Canada, held Feb. 5-7, 2010, in Toronto

The opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics will take place on Feb. 12 in Vancouver, seven years after the people of Vancouver were promised an "Olympic legacy" of athletic facilities, social housing, and an economic boom. Outside the ceremonies, a "Take Back Our City" festival and parade will remind the world that these grandiose promises, and indeed the official aims of the Olympic movement, are in stark contradiction to the grim realities of this 17-day celebration of capitalist greed.

The decision of Stephen Harper’s minority Tory government to prorogue Parliament for the second time in twelve months demonstrates profound contempt and loathing for both Parliament and the millions of Canadians who are demanding genuine action to end the economic crisis and the occupation of Afghanistan. SMELL OF DEFEAT IN AFGHANISTAN

People's Voice Editorial

The smell of defeat is in the air for the disastrous US-led military occupation of Afghanistan. An unusually blunt report by the top US commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, says "we run the risk of strategic defeat by pursuing tactical wins that cause civilian casualties or unnecessary collateral damage. The insurgents cannot defeat us militarily, be we can defeat ourselves."...

Canada Must Act Now

Issued by the Communist Party of Canada

One month has passed since the June 28th coup d’état in Honduras which drove elected President Manuel Zelaya from office and into exile, installing one of the coup leaders, Roberto Micheletti as “Interim President” in his place. And yet despite street protests and general strikes inside the country, and unanimous international condemnation, including Honduras’ suspension from the Organization of American States (OAS), the coup leaders remain in control....

Final Report (pdf)

The January 27 Federal Budget:
A "smoke and mirrors sham"

Commentary of the Central Executive Committee,
Communist Party of Canada, January 27, 2009

Published in People’s Voice - Feb. 1-14, 2009 - Vol. 17, # 2

The political mindset has changed in Ottawa since last fall, but not nearly as much as most analysts of the Jan. 27 federal budget suggest. This is not surprising, since Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s “budget consultations” were conducted almost exclusively with big business and right-wing think tanks.

Voters block Tory majority
October 15

Commentary on the October 14th federal election issued by the Central Executive Committee, Communist Party of Canada

The governing Conservatives under PM Stephen Harper managed to improve their standing in the new Parliament after the October 14 general election, but fell short of the majority which they and their corporate masters were so determined to achieve. This was a victory for the majority of Canadians, who succeeded in preventing the Harper Tories from having a completely free hand. Despite their claims, the Tories have no mandate to impose their right wing agenda on the country.

Safeguard Jobs and Incomes for Canadians in Response to the Deepening Economic Crisis
September 30

The Central Executive of the Communist Party of Canada released the following statement this morning in response to the deepening economic crisis:

Stephen Harper’s claim that the Canadian economy is on “a solid footing” looks utterly foolish after the staggering fall in stock prices on Monday, Sept. 29. In reality, Canada is on the brink of a “Dirty Thirties” depression, thanks largely to the neo-conservative policies pushed by Harper, Bush, and other advocates of ‘unfettered capitalism.’

U.S./NATO aggression in the Caucasus
August 14
The outbreak of a deadly armed conflict in the Caucasus is not only a humanitarian disaster which has already cost some 2,000 lives, but poses a very real threat of wider wars in the region. Imperialism’s preparations and aggressions in Georgia are sparks that can eventually ignite a much larger conflagration, demanding the sharpest condemnation of the international labour movement and all peace and anti-imperialist forces.
